Management consulting: turn a broad objective into a working agreement

Business area: Management Consulting
An objective such as improving efficiency is too broad to organize work. Specify the affected process, the people involved and the outcome that would make a practical difference. Establish the current position before setting a target.
Use a short working agreement to define scope, deliverables, decision owners and the information the client team will provide. List exclusions and dependencies openly. For each output, describe how it will be reviewed and who will accept it.
Review decisions and obstacles at a regular working meeting. A useful meeting ends with a named owner, an agreed next action and a date. Measure whether the changed process is being used and whether it improves the original problem, rather than counting reports produced.
