Investment management: agree the decision rules before reviewing projects

Business area: Investment Management
A useful investment discussion starts with the business objective, the funding source and the period for which capital can be committed. Keep assumptions separate from verified information so an attractive forecast does not become an accepted fact.
Prepare a one-page decision brief with the proposed use of funds, expected cash inflows and outflows, key dependencies and unresolved questions. Compare a base case with a slower-sales or delayed-collection case. Record who can approve each stage and what new evidence is required before the next commitment.
Review actual cash use and milestone evidence at agreed intervals. If an assumption changes, update the decision rather than defending the original forecast. This is a project-governance approach; an investment decision also needs assessment of the specific financial, legal and commercial circumstances.
