Business systems: agree the data meaning before connecting interfaces

Business area: Business Systems & Data Coordination
Two systems can exchange data successfully while still disagreeing about what the data means. Start with a small set of records such as customers, products and orders. Document the meaning of each shared field and which system is responsible for the authoritative value.
Agree stable identifiers, permitted status changes and how corrections are handled. Test repeated messages, missing fields, delayed delivery and partial failures. Reconciliation should reveal records that were accepted by one system but not completed by the other.
Release one end-to-end exchange first and give support staff a way to trace it. Record the source, processing result and recovery action without exposing unnecessary personal data. Expand only after the exception workflow works as reliably as the normal workflow.
